James McCabe was born in Belfast. He came to London in the 1770’s, settling at Royal Exchange in 1804. He became a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company in 1781 and a Warden in 1811, the year he died. He was succeeded by his son, also James, who is regarded as one of the finest English clock and watchmakers of the nineteenth century. He was apprenticed to Reid and Auld and gained admittance to the clockmakers Company in 1822. Robert Jeremy McCabe, James’s nephew, continued the business until he retired in 1883.

CONDITON: | This is a very handsome clock by this eminent maker. The case is in excellent condition and ret-ains its original gilding. There are very minor marks, light surface scratches and some rubbing. None of these are significant and are to be expected of a clock of this period and that has kept its original gilding. All glass panels are complete and without damage. The dial is beautifully executed. The silvering is in excellent condition as are the chapters and signature. The hands are finely cut and have a rich blue colour. The movement is in excellent condition and has been fully overhauled and running well. The finely made bimetallic compensated balance with its finely made poising screws is above the average plain balances that can be found on similar examples. The original brass bound mahogany box is in lovely condition with only minor marks and surface scratches. The original numbered key also retains some of its original gilding and is only rubbed with use of the owner winding the clock through the decades. |

What our customers say
I have used The Clock Clinic previously before moving away from the area. I required a replacement clock face for a family heirloom and initially sought help from a shop in Surrey which turned out to be extremely unhelpful, dismissive and rude. I called the Clock Clinic, and Elly could not have been more helpful! Elly spent time researching our problem, found another solution which was spot on for us, but did not result in a "sale" for them. Real "above and beyond" service, absolutely brilliant. Highly recommend.
Highly professional and courteous service from the Clock Clinic. Serviced one Baume & Mercier watch in a timely manner, replacing a used strap with a good-looking replacement. Repaired another (when others couldn't) and got it working without any attempt to "up-sell" services. Much appreciated, I would recommend Alastair, Hilary and the team.
Best watch experts in London. I took my Emporio Armani watch to get the screen repaired to multiple watch shops and they were unable to have it fixed. I even sent it back to the manufacturer and they were unable to repair it. I brought it into the Clock Clinic and they were able to repair the watch in a timely manner for a great price. Friendly and expert service. I recommend this place to anyone. Thanks team!
