A Substantial French Silvered and Gilt Eight Day Striking and Repeating Carriage clock, E.G.L., Paris. Retailed by The Goldsmiths Company, Brighton

This is a very attractive clock with beautiful cast Corinthian columns and substantial carrying handle that are accentuated by the silvering and rich gilt colouring to the case. The dial is a fine white enamel and signed ‘The Sussex Goldsmiths Co., Brighton’.

The clock’s case is carefully crafted, with intricate details and decorations that are the hallmark of French clockmaking. The hands are finely cut and are blued steel.  The clock is powered by an eight-day movement, making the clock a practical and reliable timepiece that was designed for use on long carriage journeys. The movement is finely crafted, with precision gears and mechanisms that ensure accurate timekeeping.

The case is substantially made and fully glazed with silvered capitals to the four Corinthian columns, rectangular viewing aperture and hinged Greek key carrying handle to the top. The twin going barrels movement are signed Paris, E.G.L. to the backplate, with silvered platform lever escapement and striking and repeating the hours on a rear-mounted blued steel gong.

The clock is equipped with a striking mechanism that chimes the hour and half-hour, providing a pleasing and melodic sound that adds to the clock’s charm. The striking mechanism is activated by a separate winding mechanism that is located on the back of the clock. In addition to the striking mechanism, the clock is also equipped with a repeating mechanism that allows the last hour struck to be repeated at the touch of a button. This feature was particularly useful for travellers who may have missed the previous chime due to the noise of the carriage or other distractions.

The case is in excellent condition with only minor marks and general surface scratches. All glazed panels are complete and without damage. The dial is bright and clean and has no damage, the retailer’s signature is clear and well defined.
