The silvered Roman dial with beautiful and refined scroll and foliate engraving to the centre, further engraving to the signature cartouche signed J. W. Benson/ 25 Old Bond street/London.

This clock is a very attractive little clock made in the style of Thomas Cole by one of the most prestigious watch, clockmakers and jewellers in London in the 19th Century. It is in excellent condition with only minor marks and surface scratches consistent with age and general use.

The case has some marks and tarnishing but retains its original gilding. The engraving is beautifully executed and is still very crisp and well defined. The thermometer is the original and working as it should.

The dial is well silvered and the chapters are crisp and still well defined. The hands have been beautifully made and have a good rich blued colour.

The movement is original. It has been fully overhauled and serviced and keeps good time. We expect a clock of this design and period to keep within +/- 6 minutes over the week.

A delightful English Victorian miniature engraved strut timepiece, in the manner of Thomas Cole and in the shape of a lute.

Made by J. W. Benson, 25 Old Bond Street, London. The prestigious firm of J.W. Benson was one of the most respected watch makers in London during the second half of the 19th Century.

Circa 1870

The lute shaped case has fine scrolling foliate and laurel leaf engraving to the dial surround, as well as engraving to the neck with finely calibrated inset thermometer and topped by suspension ring. The pear-shaped base has shuttered winding and setting holes and the clock is raised on a reclining square plinth.Original English going barrel movement with English lever escapement with delicate blued steel Fluer-d-Lys hands.
