Are Jaeger-LeCoultre Watches a Good Investment?
Luxury watch brands have long held an allure for those who see watches as both an investment and a stylish timepiece. Brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre have enamoured us for years with their stunning craftsmanship, history and reliability.
For many of us, watches such as these are purchased with the intention of passing them on to relatives. For others, they are viewed as an investment that, over time, results in either a profit-making sale or a spirit-crushing depreciation.
We looked at the ChronoPulse watch market index for a clearer indication of whether Jaeger-LeCoultre watches remain a good investment.
What are Jaeger-LeCoultre watches?
Jaeger-LeCoultre is known as the watchmaker's watchmaker and is often seen as a true innovator in watch design and creation. Founded in 1833 in Le Sentier, Switzerland, by Antoine LeCoultre, the brand established itself as a pioneering, innovative watchmaker with the world's most precise timekeeping device (the millionometer) emerging within twenty years of the company's formation. This reshaped watchmaking and firmly established JLC as a pioneering watchmaker.

Do Jaeger-LeCoultre watches represent a good investment?
Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are frequently recognised as watches of exceptional quality by those with a passion for horology. With a reputation for innovation, technical expertise and unique designs, they are timepieces that become conversation starters filled with enchanting backstories.
So how do they perform? Using the five-year ChronoPulse Index, we can see that Jaeger-LeCoultre performs well with an almost 17% increase in value. This is smaller than Patek Philippe (46.7%) and Audemars Piguet (34.03%) but better than Rolex (13.65%) and much better than Breitling (5.10%).
The reasons for this performance may lie in the fact that Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are not as well-known as some of the other brands, outside of watch enthusiasts. Where JLC watches may adorn the wrists of some high-profile names, Rolex, Patek Philippe and others are far more commonly seen on the wrists of just about anybody these days. This drives, as Chrono24 call it, “emotionally driven price speculation”, which leads to rapid and often inconsistent price changes. JLC watches, on the other hand, don’t encounter this and see much lower price volatility. This means that second-hand Jaeger-LeCoultre watches can sell at much more realistic prices.
Which Jaeger LeCoultre watches have increased in value the most?
Using the Jaeger-LeCoultre ChronoPulse 5-year index, seven JLC timepieces have seen double-digit value increases. Perhaps unsurprisingly for enthusiasts, each of these seven watches is a Reverso. We’ve listed the top five below.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classique 59.29% value increase
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classique has seen the largest increase of all the JLC watches, with a staggering 59.29% appreciation over the last five years. It’s a watch that fuses classic with contemporary, and its Art Deco design helps make this happen. With space on the reverse for engraving and metal or leather straps available, it is a watch that showcases the JLC style. Designed originally for polo players, it’s been recognised as the world's earliest dedicated sports watch.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso (Q2458422) 49.18% value increase
The Reverso is perhaps the first watch people think of when hearing the name Jaeger-LeCoultre. Like the Classique, it was designed with polo players in mind. In the 1930’s, polo players were complaining that their watch crystals would break during play. Ever the innovator, JLC developed a timepiece with a reversible case to protect the delicate dial. It is now seen as a status symbol by many and is frequently seen on the wrists of celebrities and royalty.
Jaeger-Le Coultre Reverso Duoface 36.92% value increase
The Reverso Duoface by JLC is another sign of innovation by the Swiss watchmaker. It’s a watch that combines artistry with engineering by providing an iconic reversible dial with two independent faces running off just one dial. 180 carefully crafted pieces enable the hand-wound movement to function, and with pink gold or stainless steel encasing it, it’s attractive and multi-functional. The attention to detail is evident with a Duoface and Baton front, hands, and Eventail on the reverse. You can see that time and care have been spent to create something striking. It is also waterproof and features a power reserve of up to 45 hours.
Jaeger-Le Coultre Reverso Grande Taille 22.13% value increase
The Jaeger-Le Coultre Reverso Grande Taille is recognised by many as the epitome of classic watches. It’s the signature JLC timepiece and, like the other Reversos mentioned in our list, was created with polo players in mind. These days, the Grande Taille been adopted by those who appreciate creativity, innovation and classic design. Eye-catching yet subtle, it balances a refined yet truly masculine appearance ideal for the modern man.
The Reverso Grande Taille maintains the quality of all other Reverso models, the iconic rectangular shape and the patented swivel motion being just two of the reasons people appreciate it. It goes beyond appearances, though. The Reverso Grand Taille’s movement endures 1000 hours of testing, demonstrating that JLC strive for perfection and continues to set the bar high.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface 20.51% value increase
Much like the other Reverso models, the Tribute Duoface is a watch showing the classic JLC innovation and design. The Tribute Duoface is a nod back to the original Reverso, paying homage to the iconic rectangular shape, Art Deco styling and precision timekeeping. Water resistant up to 50 metres, powered by the JLC 854 A calibre movement and, of course, featuring the reversible clock face, the Reverso Tribute Duoface enables you to change up the style. The Recto dial in a blue, sunray-brush has short dauphine hands, whilst the Verso dial, in silvered grey, adds a welcome contrast with its Velvety Clous de Paris guilloche design.
