French Empire Striking Mantel Clock

This handsome French Empire style striking mantel clock is ormolu mounted with enamel dial.  It strikes hours and half hours on a bell and runs for 8 days. The mahogany has a wonderful warm colour and figuring to the vaneers.

Circa 1880, it was created in the original Empire style.  The fascination in Egyptology accounts for the bronze sphinx. The inclusion of sphinxes on furniture throughout the 1800’s were popular with the French gentry as they celebrated Napoleon’s conquest of Egypt.
